The Charles River clinic is situated near Heriot Watt University at Riccarton on the south west side of Edinburgh and can easily be reached from the city centre by bus.  Most studies involve a short stay in the clinic (this time varies from study to study).  During their stay at the clinic volunteers are given all meals and have various leisure facilities that they can use such as videos, a pool table, satellite TV and electronic games.  They are also paid travelling expenses and a participation fee, to compensate for their time.

Recent studies at Charles River have included trials with drugs which one day may be used to treat asthma, arthritis and diabetes and others which may prevent heart attacks and strokes.  Many of our volunteers return regularly.  They are allowed to participate in up to three studies each year.
